Biography:
Michael J. Carter's interests are in the areas of identity research, emotions, morality, and the sociology of education. His past research focused on curriculum changes in elementary education, specifically the effects of merit pay, content standards, and scripted learning on contemporary pedagogy. He is currently studying morality and how the moral self influences human behavior. Current projects examine emotions and social structure, specifically how the moral self as expressed in one’s moral identity guides behavior in interaction and influences moral emotions—both of which serve to uphold the normative order. He also has examined how individuals’ status and relative status in the social structure correspond to specific moral emotions. His research seeks to reveal how actors’ moral identities and the structural position of self and others influence emotional reactions to behavior.
